GENERAL SURGERY + PUAWĀNANGA

As part of Health New Zealand’s multi-stage redevelopment of Puawānanga Outpatients, YDS Studio collaborated with architect Alex Heperi and artist Shanon Hawea to introduce a bold, culturally significant visual identity to the newly refurbished facility.

Designed to reflect the spirit of Kahungunu and the natural symbolism of Puawānanga (Clematis), the custom wall graphics and wayfinding signage seamlessly integrate into the architectural environment, enhancing both patient experience and clinical functionality. The vibrant, Tāniko-inspired patterns celebrate heritage while fostering a sense of calm, warmth, and cultural connection - aligning with Health New Zealand’s vision for modern, patient-centered care.

Through thoughtful collaboration and precise execution, this project demonstrates the impact of strategic environmental graphics in transforming healthcare spaces into welcoming, meaningful, and efficient environments.
